About a week ago, I received a job offer from a real good company near Sheboygan, WI. All things equal, the opportunity is worth taking, but I'm still mulling over a few options before I counter.

Being a resident of the Phoenix Metro area for the past several years (a place without winter, BTW), Sheboygan is very different than down here. Not that this is a bad thing -- Phoenix is rapidly turning into a version of Los Angeles, complete with an hour-long commute (24 miles) and housing prices that are quickly becoming unaffordable.

I've researched the Sheboygan area, and on paper, it seems like the quality of life is good. So, for the WI residents out there -- is there any insight you can lend to the area? How's winter out there? Any good recreational activities? My experience with the area is limited to the three or four days I was out there in late September and early October.

(PS -- I'm a native Coloradan, so I'm not necessarily worried about snow, other than scraping windows!)

I lived in the Milwaukee area from 1956 to 1965. Sheboygan is near or on the lake as I recall. You'll have a fair anount of lake effect snow in the winter and fog near the lake many mornings. Summers are humid. The state leans Democratic in politics and the legislature never thought of a tax they did not love. When I took a job in Illinois and moved there I not only landed a nice salary increase but also saw my state income tax drop a thousand dollars a year and that was 1965. There was a limited Socialist Party there then. The press there leaned heavily liberal. People used to refer to the Milwaukee Journal as the "Miwaukee Daily Worker". Northern Wisconsin and upper Michigan are nice in the summer but have a lot of people coming up from Chicago and Milwaukee. There are some ski runs but not like those in Colorado. Lake Michigan and Green Bay are great for boating.

Sheboygan is fairly close to lake michigan, so the winters aren't really all that bad. perhaps some lake effect snow now and again along with the "regular" snow.

my biggest concern would be from going to a metroplis like phoenix to a samller city.

the desert air i hear is different from wisconsin air. humidity up here is bad at times

Sheboygan OK as far as I know.Never heard nuthin' weird about it.What company...Kohler?Acuity(my ins.company)?

Thanks all for the feedback. The offer is from Kohler, and I'm going to take it.

Humidity is no concern -- one should experience Phoenix in monsoon season...ugh.

Arizona is really fun in the mid-summer. I remember Williams AFB in the summer of '74. The only thing dry about the heat is the dry heaves that it gives you. Temp 110�+, ungodly high humidity, severe thunderstorms, and amazing lightning.

Good luck in WI, KAppuccino. If you feel the need to go to the big city, Milwaukee isn't that far of a drive. Nor is Chicago.

Just watch out for the damn deer on the roads. We're getting a couple of deer/car accidents a day around here. Ask the locals, they'll fill you in. (The latter wasn't a joke, it's a real problem around these parts.)
